In 1917, 400 years of Ottoman rule ended by
British conquest; British Foreign Minister Balfour pledges support
for establishment of a "Jewish national home in the British
Mandate of Palestine.
It is important to note that an independent Palestinian
State never existed :
1) From 1417-1917 the region was part of the Ottoman
empire. This was also true of all countries from the region, including
Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Israel.
2) In 1917, the region that is currently defined today as the state
of Jordan, the State of Israel and the West Bank becomes a region
under control of the British, under the name "The British Mandate
of Palestine". After a few decades of Zionism and Jewish immigration
to the area, the British pledge support for the establishment of
a "Jewish national home" in the British Mandate of Palestine.
3) In 1922, the British give over 75% of the mandate of Palestine
to King Hussein of Jordan, creating "Transjordan". At
that time, Jews are not allowed to live east of the Jordan river.
4) In 1946, Transjordan becomes the State of Jordan.
5) In 1947, the UN creates a partition plan allowing the Jewish
and Arab residents of what remains of the British Mandate of Palestine
to create their own states. Jews accept and the State of Israel
is created. The Arab Muslims refuse and the State of Palestine is
not created.
6) Up to this point, Jews and Arabs living in the region were called
"Palestinians". From this point on, the citizens of Israel
became "Israelis" (Jews and Arabs), while the Arab residents
of the West Bank and Gaza became the "Palestinians". No
Jews were allows to live in the West Bank and Gaza. Both of these
territories were under Jordanian and Egyptian rule until 1967, when
they came under the military and adminitrative control of Israel.

Pinhas Tokatli, 81

January 27, 2002 - Pinhas Tokatli, 81, of Jerusalem was killed and
about 150 people were wounded, several seriously, in a suicide bombing
on Jaffa Road in the center of Jerusalem shortly before 12:30. The
terrorist, who was killed in the explosion, was apparently a female
student from Nablus.
Pinhas Tokatli, 81, grandfather of 13
murdered by a Palestinian genocide bomber
Pinhas Tokatli, 81, was killed in a Jerusalem suicide bombing,
and was buried at 3 p.m. on 1/27/2002 at the Har Hamenuhot Cemetery.
Tokatli, born in the capital and a fifth generation Israeli, served in the
Hagana, and worked in advertising. He died only a short distance from the spot on
Jaffa Road where, in the 1940s, British soldiers beat him up, damaging his vision.
After retiring, he became interested in cycling and was one of the founders of the
Jerusalem cycling club.
His son Gilad, 35, said his father went riding on his bicycle daily and had become an
amateur painter. He had been coming home from a painting class via the downtown area,
where he was going to buy some paints, when he was killed.
Police said Tokatli had been standing very close to the woman terrorist when she blew
herself up.
Gilad described his father as a gentle man, who refused to grow old. "My father hated
the bus and used to walk or ride his bike," he said. The bicycle was left outside the
family's home in the Kiryat Hayovel section, which is filled with dozens of Tokatli's
paintings, many of his beloved Jerusalem.
Family members said Tokatli's grandchildren liked to paint with him. He is survived by
his wife Hanna, two sons, two daughters, and 13 grandchildren.
May God bless his memory.
