A 10-year-old child was critically wounded after being shot in the head in a drive-by shooting near the British Police junction in the West Bank on Sunday afternoon.

The driver of the vehicle, a friend of the child's father, was lightly wounded in the hand during the attack. The father of the child, 44, was in the car along with two other passengers.

A 10-year-old child was critically wounded after being shot in the head in a drive-by shooting near the British Police junction in the West Bank on Sunday afternoon.

The driver of the vehicle, a friend of the child's father, was lightly wounded in the hand during the attack. The father of the child, 44, was in the car along with two other passengers.

The Fatah's military wing, the Al-Aksa Brigades, claimed responsibility for the attack. A statement issued by the group said the attack was a retaliation for Thursday's attack in Shfaram.

A Magen David Adom crew stationed at the settlement of Ateret received word of the attack and was at the scene within 10 minutes, where they began to resuscitate the unconscious child.

The child was evacuated from the scene by an IAF helicopter to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem, where, according to Army Radio, his condition was stabilized although still listed as critical.

Colonel Michael Edelstein, commander of the Paratrooper Brigade, said there had been no specific alerts to such an attack, and added that there was much more that the Palestinian Authority could do to prevent such attacks.

"The IDF will have to reconsider it's easing of restrictions on Palestinian travel on West Bank roads," added Edelstein.

He said that more attacks of this kind were expected during the lead up to disengagement, and as the IDF engages in future operations in the West Bank to stop terror attacks.

The five Israelis were on their way from Jerusalem to Ateret on a holiday trip when terrorists from a passing car shot around twenty bullets at them from the back window.

The terrorists, who were driving a white Fiat Uno, then fled from the scene to an unmanned IDF roadblock at the Palestinian village of Ein Sinya. They set fire to their own car, and threw a gas canister in the back to fuel the flames.

Another Palestinian car then picked them up and drove them towards Ramallah.

The IDF is still investigating the incident and called this a well-planned and complex attack. IDF roadblocks set up on roads in the area of the shooting created kilometer long traffic jams.

An IDF spokesman on the scene said that to his knowledge these tactics had not before been used in West Bank drive by shootings by Palestinians.

This was the first such attack in that area in several months.

The British Police checkpoint, north of Ofra, was the site of a deadly terrorist attack in March of 2002, in which a Palestinian sniper killed ten soldiers and civilians.
