A suicide bomber blew up Sunday morning on a bus in Jerusalem's French Hill quarter, killing seven people and wounding 20, police said.

Four of the wounded in the attack on bus no. 6 were listed in serious condition.

The blast occurred at 5:50 a.m. local time, when a bomber disguised as an Orthodox Jew wearing a tallit and a yarmulke, detonated 10 kg. explosive strapped to his waist. [...]

Due to the attack, which is the fourth in a space of 12 hours, including a string of bombings of Jewish targets in Casablanca that killed 40 people, Sharon postponed his plans to fly to Washington and schedule urgent cabinet consultations for Sunday evening.

Suicide blast kills 7 on Jerusalem bus

A suicide bomber blew up Sunday morning on a bus in Jerusalem's French Hill quarter, killing seven people and wounding 20, police said.

Four of the wounded in the attack on bus no. 6 were listed in serious condition.

The blast occurred at 5:50 a.m. local time, when a bomber disguised as an Orthodox Jew wearing a tallit and a yarmulke, detonated 10 kg. explosive strapped to his waist.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the bombing that came just hours after Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had a groundbreaking meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmud Abbas.

Due to the attack, which is the fourth in a space of 12 hours, including a string of bombings of Jewish targets in Casablanca that killed 40 people, Sharon postponed his plans to fly to Washington and schedule urgent cabinet consultations for Sunday evening.

The bomber in Jerusalem, apparently got on the bus in the French Hill quarter and set off his explosives as the vehicle passed by the overpass on Route No. 1, headed toward the center of town.

Minutes later a second explosion occurred a few kilometers down the road at a spot checkpoint placed at the Al Ram junction, where another suicide bomber detonated himself causing no other casualties. Police are investigating whether this bomber was working in tandem with the bus attacker.

The bus was an eery sight, as the bodies of some of the seven people killed remained upright in their seats. Rescue workers covered them with plastic sheeting. One was leaning out a window, and another with legs still crossed.

Most victims were those seated at the front of the double bus. The windows were completely blown away and the roof was peeled off. A woman's purse lay in the street about 70 yards (meters) in front of the bus

The wounded were rushed to four Jerusalem hospitals, Hadassah on Mount Scopus, Hadassah in Ein Karem, Bikur Cholim and Sha'arei Tsedek. Four were in serious condition, officials said.

Jerusalem Police Chief Mickey Levy said the bomber was disguised as a Jew, and wore a tallit and a yarmulke.

It was the first such attack in Jerusalem since last November. Some 357 people have been killed in 93 suicide attacks since September 2000.

Israel Radio said the Palestinian Authority's Information Minister issued a statement condemning the attack, which came hours after Abbas met Sharon at the Israeli leader's office in Jerusalem.

In a statement after the Saturday night meeting, Sharon said it was agreed that the first priority in peacemaking must be stopping Palestinian attack.

Responding to the bus attack, David Baker, an official in Sharon's office, said the Palestinian Authority must use "all means available" to stop the attacks.

"Palestinian terror cannot rule the Palestinian agenda,"Baker said.

In another terror attack, a Kiryat Arba couple, Gadi and Dina Levy, were killed in a suicide bombing in the West Bank city of Hebron. Both were to be buried on Sunday.

Several hours after the Hebron attack, soldiers shot and killed two Palestinians who tried to infiltrate the community of Sha'arei Tikvah in the West Bank.
