I disagree on the comment about Mussolini and Franco. Until Badoglio's coup and subsequent liberation by Hitler (when he could no longer oppose Hitler's wishes) Mussolini protected the Jews. To my utter shame it was far better to be Jew in the zone of France occupied by the Italians than in the Free Zone (aka Vichy France) since the Italians forbade the civilian authorities (getting their orders from Vichy) to enforce Vichy's anti-semitic legislation. I don't know if this attitude towards the Jews was Mussolini's initiative or something he had to do to placate the monarchists in the Army but the facts still stand. And I don't remember hearing the Italian fascist party having an antisemtic doctrine (but I am not an expert).

Now Franco. During the Civil War and immediately after there were a slogan about the Judeo-Massonic conspiracy. And the spanish authorities did their utmost to tackle the efforts of their embassador to save Salonica's Jews but 1) Spain was literally starving so they wouldn't welcome more mouths to feed 2) In order to placate the Germans Franco had had to nominate his brother in law Serrano Suner who was a rabid progerman as Minister of Foreign Affairs (a progerman minister made easier to have Germans swallow the pill when Franco said no like at Hendaya) and a notorious antisemitic. It was this man who was supervising that embassador. 3) Once the Salonica Jews arrived to Spain (ie when they became an internal problem no longer supervised by Serrano Suner) they were not sent back. 4) I had a friend who was a Spanish Jew and his parents had told him that even during the 1940-1944 period the authorities had treated them as full Spanish citizens. Not second class citizens.

Yaakov made a good point about how the media portrays the acts in Israel. I also find the imbalances of our stereotypes. If many people think that we Jews control the media, why the hell would we be in such a negative light? I do grow tired of all this, with the lenght that this conflict has ran I grow less tolerant of palestinians everyday. With the pullout from Gaza there has been a small ceasefire that hasnt been entirely adhered to. With the palestinians electing Hamas to power I think it is clear that they are not entirely pro peace. I think that if Hamas does not renounce its determination to crush Israel, and continues to attack, then there must be another war. I do not agree with the mercy towards terrorists. There should be no arrests, only executions. These people have to right to exist. Their families are not able to plead innocense, they should be arrested while the actual perpotraters should be executed on the spot. I would not call it collective punishment. The families of these terroists can not be left completely in the dark, they must have some sign. This has gone on long enough, diplomacy has failed. The only way to bring about peace is through more bloodshed, we must make the decision as to whos blood will spill, it would be wise to not choose our own.

Serrano Suner helped the Jews but they were held in cars and by the way Serrano Suner was a decendant of Jewish people himself.
