Ha'aretz (www.haaretzdaily.com) reports that a neo-nazi skinhead killed an orthodox Jewish man outside of a pizzeria in Toronto, Canada.

Toronto police chief Julian Fantino said Sunday that the murder of David Rosenzweig - a 48-year-old ultra-Orthodox Jewish man stabbed to death in the city in the early hours of Sunday morning - was "a murder motivated by hate."

Speaking at a press conference, Fantino said that the attack was racially-motivated, but that the 48-year-old father of six was an innocent passerby, killed "because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

"The victim was assisting his son with a disabled motor vehicle in the area of Lawrence Avenue and Bathurst Street in the City of Toronto," said Fantino. "He was approached from behind by two men and one woman. One of the men stabbed the victim in the back and the three suspects ran away from the scene. The victim was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later."

According to Fantino, police are now searching for 20-year-old Christian Steven McBride, their main suspect in the murder, who was seen fleeing the scene of the murder. With McBride at the time was another white man with a shaved head. "We are looking for a small group of young people described as 19 to 20 years of age," added Toronto police Sgt. Jim Muscat.

According to unofficial police sources, the suspects in the murder have told police that they did not set out to kill anyone.

The skinheads said that they were angry at being refused service at the Israeli-owned King David pizzeria in the heart of the Jewish neighborhood of North York. They claim that after attacking and lightly wounding an employee of the restaurant, they were on their way out when they encountered the victim - who, it now appears, only stopped at the restaurant to call for help, after his car broke down.

Officially, Toronto police are saying that the motive for the murder is unclear, and that a press conference will be held to relay any relevant information. Informally, however, some police sources are defining the murder as a racially motivated hate crime. A police source also confirmed that several eyewitnesses have given their statements on the murder, and that several skinheads are being questioned.

The Israeli consulate in Toronto has not officially been involved at this stage, and there is no information that the murdered man was an Israeli, contrary to some Israeli media reports

Melchior worried by 'new' anti-Semitism
Deputy Defense Minister Michael Melchior expressed concern Sunday over a "new type of anti-Semitism," which he said was directed at Israel and Zionism.

"What has taken place over the last four months has not been seen since World War Two," he told Israel Radio. "There are places with 100 percent growth in anti-Semitism."

"The burning of synagogues and the attacks are only the symptoms," he went on. "The dehumanization of society, which is reinforcing anti-Jewish violence is extremely dangerous and we must fight against anti-Semitism because it is a threat to democracy and fairness in society."

Melchior suggested that people create "coalitions of sanity" to defeat "the coalitions of hate."

Britain's Jews outraged over Swansea synagogue attack
The Jewish community in Britain has expressed outrage over the desecration of a synagogue in the Welsh town of Swansea on Thursday night. Vandals broke into the synagogue, destroyed a Torah scroll, drew swastikas on the wall and tried to burn the building down. A South Wales police spokesman said the attack had caused substantial damage and was being treated as an anti-Semitic incident.

Mike Whine, of the Community Security Trust (CST), which oversees security in Jewish communities, said the Swansea assailants had forced open a window of the synagogue, drew a swastika on one wall and took the scroll into a garden outside to destroy it.

"There was a big sign saying 'T4,' which we believe is a reference to the Nazi euthanasia program in the concentration camps," Whine said. "Excrement was left and there was a failed attempt to set fire to the place."

Harry Sherman, chairman of the synagogue, said the area's 70-member Jewish community had been "shell-shocked" by the attack. He said the 300-year-old Torah scroll had been ripped and left outside the synagogue. "I doubt if it can be repaired. These scrolls are handwritten and there aren't many scribes in this country... It's priceless," Sherman said.

This is the second time this year that a synagogue in Britain has been attacked.

The Swansea Synagogue was originally built in 1760. It was destroyed by German air attacks on the city during World War II and was rebuilt after the war. This is the first time the synagogue has been attacked in an anti-Semitic incident. Community sources said there has been limited Neo-Nazi activity in the area, but until now they had only targeted Muslim-Asian communities in the area.

In April, in an attack on Finsbury Park synagogue in north London, a swastika was daubed in green paint on the rabbi's lectern, prayer shawls and skull caps were hurled to the floor, where excrement had been left behind, and windows were smashed. No suspects have been detained so far in either case.

Survey indicates anti-Semitic beliefs
Security analysts point to contradictions in the attitudes of Britons toward Israel and the Jewish community. Figures show that since April - when attacks against Jews and Jewish institutions peaked - there has been a steady decline in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in the country.

However, a new survey conducted by the Anti-Defamation League in a number of countries in Europe shows that a fifth of Britons believe Jews have too much power in the business world. Of those surveyed, 23 percent said they believe Jews talk too much about the Holocaust and a third said they believed ant-Jewish sentiment would increase in the next few years. Almost half of the participants said they have no or little contact with Jews.

The CST believes that the findings of the survey support the conclusion that the anti-Zionist propaganda campaign in Britain by pro-Palestinian activists has afforded widespread legitimization to anti-Semitism.
